Sydney’s Growing $65 Billion Metro Project: How it Compares with Global Cities

Sydney’s metro network is undergoing a transformation, with a $65 billion expansion that places it among the world’s largest suburban rail projects, rivalling Paris’ Grand Paris Express. This monumental upgrade is set to reshape the way Sydneysiders move through the city, creating a faster, more connected system.

The second stage of the metro project, stretching from Chatswood to Sydenham, is due for completion next year. When the driverless M1 line is fully operational, it will span 113 kilometres and 46 stations, connecting key areas like Bankstown, Parramatta, and Western Sydney Airport by 2032. This expansion follows the successful opening of the Metro Northwest line in 2019, which already carries over 264,000 passengers each weekday.

Although Sydney’s growing metro system will enhance daily commutes and reduce congestion, it is still dwarfed by some of the world’s leading metro networks. Cities like Tokyo, Paris, and Singapore offer lessons in efficiency and scale. Tokyo’s metro system carries millions daily, known for its impressive punctuality and coverage. Paris, with its vast underground network, has already begun expanding further with the Grand Paris Express, set to add 200 kilometres of track.

Still, Sydney’s metro will make a substantial difference in urban mobility, creating greater connections between existing train services and opening new links to critical areas. As the city continues to grow, the metro will play an essential role in supporting Sydney’s future transport needs and reducing the pressure on its traditional rail network.
